Scattered areas of irregular fluorescence, only visible to recto under UV light, not affecting image. Scattered small areas of stain, especially to upper left margin, and to area below title cartouche. An area of black stray ink to lower right quadrant of sheet. As the deity's messengers, the foxes were believed to produce mysterious flames known as kitsunebi, or "fox fires," whose number local farmers interpreted as an omen of the coming rice harvest.
