It is rare to find a Yuan dynasty stem bowl painted with phoenix rather than dragons, although one related piece is known, painted with a pair of phoenix but with straight rim and undecorated bamboo-shaped stem, excavated at Nanguan, Dingxing county, Hebei province and now in the Hebei Provincial Museum, illustrated in Zhongguo Wenwu Jinghua Daquan, Taoci Juan, 1993, no. 566, where its rarity is noted. For one of the more common dragon-decorated stem bowls, compare the example in the Jilin Provincial Museum, published ibid., no. 565.
