Exuding a profound sense of serenity and monumental grace, the present limestone figure is a quintessential masterpiece of Northern Qi Buddhist sculpture. The stylistic vocabulary of this period represents a fascinating synthesis of cultural exchanges. As Buddhism permeated through China, its artistic expressions were heavily indebted to Indian prototypes, particularly the Gupta style, which celebrated the natural, underlying contours of the human form. This Indian tradition, in turn, bore the legacy of Greco-Roman aesthetics, a lineage beautifully manifested in the rhythmic, cascading folds of the Buddha’s robes seen here. The sheer garment clings delicately to the gentle curves of the torso and legs, while the figure's dignified posture and the positioning of the arms imbue the sculpture with an imposing yet approachable presence. Notably, the survival of extensive original pigments and traces of gilding on the stone surface is exceptionally rare, offering a precious glimpse into the vibrant devotional atmosphere of the sixth century.
The physiognomy and the masterful treatment of the drapery closely align this figure with the celebrated hoard of Buddhist sculptures unearthed in 1996 at the Longxing Temple site in Qingzhou, Shandong province. Now preserved in the Qingzhou Municipal Museum, this group includes a 116 cm standing Buddha bearing a head nimbus, which shares the same relaxed stance, full, rounded face, and delicately articulated, naturalistic features. A further comparable standing Buddha (150 cm) from the Qingzhou discoveries exhibits an almost identical benevolent smile. Both examples were exhibited and published in Return of the Buddha: The Qingzhou Discoveries, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2002, cat. nos 22 and 23.
上述兩件青州造像均曾展出並錄於《Return of the Buddha: The Qingzhou Discoveries》,皇家藝術學院,倫敦,2002年,展覽圖錄編號22及23
