A native of Shanghai, Zheng Chongbin originally trained as a figure painter in the gongbi (meticulous brush) tradition. After his first solo exhibition at the Shanghai Museum of Art in 1988, he came to San Francisco on scholarship as an MFA art student in 1989. There he began to experiment with mixing Chinese ink and white acrylic paint, capitalizing on the interactions of the two media. Today, Zheng Chongbin's paintings are in the permanent collection of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, The Hong Kong Museum of Art, M+ Hong Kong, the British Museum, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among other prestigious collections.
