Among Qi Baishi's most celebrated subjects, shrimp provided the artist with an ideal vehicle through which to demonstrate the expressive possibilities of ink. In the present work, seven shrimps advance across the paper in loosely organized groups, their translucent bodies articulated through modulated washes and their segmented shells defined with remarkably economical strokes. Fine, sweeping lines describe the antennae and legs, creating a web of rhythmic movement across the otherwise open composition.
Qi's shrimp paintings were grounded in sustained observation. Rather than rendering the creatures through meticulous description, he distilled their anatomy into a highly personal vocabulary of wet and dry brushwork. The bodies are suggested through pale, layered washes, while darker accents define the heads, eyes, and joints. The contrast between the dense ink of the heads and the diluted washes of the bodies conveys both physical substance and the impression of transparency. The long antennae extend beyond the individual forms, linking the shrimp together and animating the surrounding blank space.
The inscription records that the work was painted when Qi Baishi was "93 years old." This corresponds to 1953 under the artist's distinctive system of reckoning his age. Qi generally calculated his age from 1863, the lunar calendar year into which his birth fell, rather than from 1864, his Gregorian birth year. He also used the traditional Chinese system of nominal age, under which a person was considered one year old at birth.
An additional adjustment arose in 1937. According to Qi's autobiography, a fortune-teller warned him of a dangerous passage during his seventy-fifth year. As a means of evading this predicted misfortune, Qi adopted what he called the strategy of "deceiving Heaven and crossing the sea," publicly advancing his stated age from seventy-five to seventy-seven. Consequently, dates assigned to works inscribed with an age of seventy-seven or above are normally calculated by subtracting four years from the stated age.
The work bears the collector's seal of Alice Boney, or Pang Nai (1901-1988), a pioneering New York dealer and collector who began specializing in Chinese art in the 1920s. Boney became a leading authority on Asian art in the United States and helped shape several important American collections; she also served as an early mentor to the celebrated dealer and collector Robert H. Ellsworth. Her particular interest in Qi Baishi is further reflected in her posthumously published essay, "Of Qi Baishi."

作品上盖有Alice Boney(庞耐,1901-1988)的收藏印。
