This dynamic triptych illustrates the legendary encounter between Ushiwakamaru, the youthful Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and the warrior-monk Musashibō Benkei on Kyoto's Gojō Bridge. According to tradition, Benkei had resolved to seize one thousand swords from passing warriors, but was defeated by the agile young Ushiwakamaru and thereafter became his most devoted retainer.
Kuniyoshi enriches the familiar episode with supernatural intervention. Sōjōbō, king of the tengu of Mount Kurama, and his companions are shown aiding Ushiwakamaru, leaping through the composition and overwhelming the formidable Benkei. In medieval legend, the tengu instructed the young hero in swordsmanship and military strategy after the defeat of the Minamoto clan, preparing him for his future role in restoring his family's fortunes.
